Abstract

Sleep disturbance is one of the most common complaints experienced by pregnant women, particularly during the third trimester. Physiological and hormonal changes, together with physical discomfort caused by uterine enlargement, may reduce sleep quality and negatively affect both maternal and fetal health. Pregnancy exercise is a recommended non-pharmacological intervention that promotes relaxation, improves blood circulation, reduces muscle tension, and enhances sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between pregnancy exercise and sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women at Pera Clinic, Medan Tuntungan District. This analytical cross-sectional study involved all third-trimester pregnant women attending antenatal care at Pera Clinic, totaling 34 respondents selected using a total sampling technique. Pregnancy exercise participation was assessed using an observation checklist, while sleep quality was measured using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05.Of the respondents, 18 (52.9%) performed pregnancy exercise optimally, while 16 (47.1%) performed it non-optimally. Good sleep quality was reported by 16 respondents (47.1%), whereas poor sleep quality was experienced by 18 respondents (52.9%). Chi-square analysis demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between pregnancy exercise and sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women (p = 0.000). Pregnancy exercise was significantly associated with sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women. Regular participation in pregnancy exercise may serve as an effective non-pharmacological strategy to improve maternal sleep quality and should be encouraged as part of routine antenatal care.
