THE INFLUENCE OF KNOWLEDGE ATTITUDE AND ENVIRONMENT ON THE SMOKING BEHAVIOR OF ADOLESCENTS IN PIJORKOLING VILLAGE PADANGSIDIMPUAN TENGGARA DISTRICT PADANGSIDIMPUAN CITY

Abstract

Smoking is a public health issue as it can lead to various types of death. This can become a time bomb in 25 years to come, given that diseases such as cancer are related to the duration and quantity of smoking. Smoking behavior among adolescents generally increases over time in line with their development, characterized by a rise in the frequency and intensity of smoking, often resulting in nicotine dependence.

The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of knowledge, attitude, and environment on adolescent smoking behavior in Pijorkoling Village, Padangsidimpuan Tenggara District. This study is analytical in nature, using a cross-sectional study design to examine the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and environment on adolescent smoking behavior in Pijorkoling Village, Padangsidimpuan Tenggara District over a period of six months, from June 2024 to January 2025. The population of this study consists of all male adolescents in Pijorkoling Village, Padangsidimpuan Tenggara District, totaling 384 individuals. A sample of 156 individuals was selected. Data analysis was performed using Chi-Square and multiple logistic regression.

The results show that there is a significant relationship between knowledge, attitude, and environment with smoking behavior (p<0.05), with only knowledge and environment showing a significant influence. The Percentage Correct value indicates that the variables of knowledge and environment can explain 64.7% of the influence on adolescent smoking behavior in Pijorkoling Village, Padangsidimpuan Tenggara District, while the remaining 35.3% is influenced by other factors not included in this study’s variables.
It is recommended that adolescents in Pijorkoling Village limit smoking habits and enhance their knowledge about smoking and its harmful effects.
